A loop tool is a hand tool with a loop of metal wire or ribbon on a handle, used to trim, carve and hollow out clay. Potters use them to trim foot rings on the wheel and to scoop out the inside of solid forms.
What Is Loop Tool?
Loop tools come in many shapes: round, square, triangular and teardrop loops, made from thin wire for fine carving or flat, sharpened steel ribbon for trimming. Most beginners start with a basic tool kit that includes a couple of loop tools alongside a wire, sponge, needle tool and rib.
For trimming, the leather-hard piece is centred upside down on the wheel and the loop tool is held steady against it as it turns, shaving off curls of clay. Sharp tools cut cleanly and quickly, while dull ones chatter and drag. Some potters prefer trimming tools with tungsten carbide blades, which stay sharp for years.
In hand building and sculpture, loop tools hollow out solid forms so the walls are an even thickness, which helps them dry and fire without cracking or exploding. Keeping a set of different sizes makes it easier to reach into tight spaces and curves. A small sharpening file keeps steel ribbons cutting cleanly.
